Its back… Ignite the Arts

Art Walk!

Celebrate the end of winter as we come together to support our thriving artist community. Lace up and join the excitement for one of Penticton’s most anticipated events!

CAROL MUNRO FINE ART

We are thrilled to introduce Carol Munro, a talented Canadian artist residing in the picturesque setting of Penticton, British Columbia. Her artistry is profoundly influenced by the natural beauty and geography of the Okanagan Valley, evident in the captivating essence of her work.

Carol's artistic vision is eloquently expressed in her own words: "There is a persistent whisper of things not-quite-seen, but powerful—forces and presences which are oddly familiar at some deep animal level within us. It is this sense of cycles—of movement, recurrence and belonging that I work to record when I put my mark on the paper or the canvas."

In her studio, Carol meticulously crafts her pieces, incorporating a unique technique that involves working images into a sanded surface, resulting in a rough and distressed finish. Through a combination of image transfer, pen, pastels, encaustic, and watercolor pencil, she enriches shapes and colors, adding depth and dimension to her creations. Some pieces are further enhanced with a layer of beeswax, enhancing their translucency and creating a sense of depth and distance.

Carol's paintings are more than mere representations; they are records of places, people, and events, faded and scraped over time like cherished memories. She explores the concept that our minds preserve experiences as they occurred, maintaining their freshness and vibrancy. In Carol's words, "Wayfinding traces the evolution of these works as my art moves through to the outer limits of encaustic and beyond, into mixed media, digital art, and textiles."

Carol Munro's work is a poignant reflection of the passage of time and the beauty that resides in memory. Her art invites us to delve into the enigma of recollection, where objects and characters are eroded by the roughshod passage of time, yet their beauty endures in the vivid landscapes of our minds.

Family day weekend is full of things to do!

We would like to reminder everyone of the following.

Free Family Day Community Canvas Event

The Penticton Art Gallery and the Penticton & District Community Arts Council are excited to announce its upcoming Family Day event, scheduled to take place on February 17th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Penticton Art Gallery.

The highlight of the event will be a collaborative canvas project, where kids and families can come together to contribute to a communal painting. This canvas, once completed, will be transformed into something special for the “Parade for No Reason” during the Ignite the Arts Festival, set to take place on March 29th at 6:30 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside two Artists in Residence (AIR) from the PDCAC, as well as local Artist Jenny Long, who will guide them through the creative process.

In addition to the canvas project, the tearoom space in the Penticton Art Gallery will host other creative activities such as rock painting and coloring pages. Refreshments and snacks will also be provided for attendees to enjoy throughout the event.

Chelsea Terry, PAG Communications Coordinator, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, "We are thrilled to offer a space where families of all kinds can come together and unleash their creativity. This event is not only about creating art but also about building connections within our community, something the missions of both PDCAC and PAG have in common.”

Thanks to a partnership and grant with BC Museums Association, funding has been secured to allocate for Artist in Residence fees, refreshments, and materials, giving the ability for the two arts organizations to present these activities for free to anyone who wishes to participate.

Attendees to the Family Day Community Canvas event are encouraged to join in the fun and return to join in the parade during Ignite the Arts.

Seeds of Hope

From January 31 through March 28, 2023 Kettle Valley Memorial together with Tumbleweed Gallery will present Seeds of Hope, an exhibition of paintings by Kelowna artist, Jolene Mackie. Her first solo exhibition since the COVID shutdown, it is especially meaningful to Jolene: it is dedicated to her mother who passed away in June 2022.

An Emily Carr fine arts graduate, Jolene is a recipient of the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan Visual Arts Award. Her work is widely exhibited throughout the Okanagan Valley and British Columbia. Aside from paintings on the usual canvas or board, Mackie’s murals can be seen on the walls of the administration building at Naramata Centre, at the Vernon City parkade, on the ceiling of the Kelowna CMHA and at the BC Children’s Hospital Teck Acute Care Centre in Vancouver.

“My paintings (are) a vessel for my feelings and how I process and understand the world. My creative practice is deeply rooted in my mortality…I am this being, this lump of flesh - that has consciousness! And yet this body is so temporary. Everything is so ephemeral”.

Jolene Mackie is known for her surreal, otherworldly scenes. Islands float serenely in outer space painted in hues that range from soft blues and greys to orange and mauve, reminiscent of an Albert Bierstadt landscape on up to a more modern palette of unabashedly brilliant jewel tones.

The central figure often found in her paintings is a backpack-toting robot bearing a heart on his bib: This curious little investigator… has somewhere to take me; he’s got something to show me. The robot might be sitting at the edge of an island, feet dangling in space, or walking along a magical path. Curly-cued fronds or a rainbow-coloured swirl of bejewelled geometric shapes emanate from him and flow towards the sky. Perhaps they depict the robot’s thoughts or emotions of awe or wonderment - not fear - as he stands in the midst of the unknown.

It was one such painting that Kevin Smith, owner of Kettle Valley Memorial purchased from Tumbleweed Gallery a few years ago. He describes the piece entitled A Moment to Ponder (see below) as “very cool - there’s this robot, roaming around in the universe - sort of like what it might be after we pass on”. The painting now hangs in the viewing room at Kettle Valley Memorial, where it gives solace to visitors grieving the loss of a loved one.
